When to build
Most of the time you should buy. This page is about the times you should not.
Bespoke build has a bad reputation in professional services, and largely a deserved one. Firms have been sold systems they could not maintain, by people who left, on stacks nobody else understood. So the first thing we do on a development conversation is try to talk you out of it.
There are three situations where building is genuinely the better call. The first is when the process is specific to how your firm competes, in which case buying a generic product means becoming generic. The second is when three products would each solve a third of the problem and you would end up running all three. The third is when the AI is the easy part and the integration with your case management system is the hard part, which is more often true than not.
And two situations where it is not
If a mature product does the job, buy the product. And if the underlying process is broken, fix the process before automating it, because a bespoke system built around a bad workflow makes that workflow permanent.

Internal applications with AI inside
A tool your people use daily, where a model does one specific job well. Usually a retrieval, drafting or classification job sitting inside an otherwise conventional application.
Agents that complete a defined task
Scoped agents that carry out a bounded piece of work end to end, with a human decision point where one is needed, logging every step so an auditor can follow what happened and why.
Integration layers
The connective work between your practice or case management system, your document management system and whatever AI capability sits above them. Unglamorous, and usually the reason a project succeeds or fails.
Client facing tools
Portals, intake tools and self service journeys where a model improves the client experience. Higher governance bar, because the output leaves the building and carries your firm's name on it.
Governed by construction
Governance is the platform the build sits on.
Every build we deliver is entered on your AI system inventory before it goes live, with its own risk and impact assessment, using only models from your approved list. Decisions are logged so an audit can reconstruct them. There is a defined review point and a defined retirement point, because an AI system with no end of life plan becomes an unmanaged risk the moment its owner changes job.
That is what pillar one buys you. A firm with an AI management system in place can commission a bespoke build and answer for it. A firm without one is producing something it will have to retrospectively justify, usually under time pressure, usually to somebody unsympathetic.
You own the output. Repository, deployment pipeline, documentation and runbooks are handed over and walked through. If you could not take the work to another supplier tomorrow, we have built you a dependency.

Straight answers
Development questions we get asked
Who owns the code?
You do, including the repository, the pipeline and the documentation. We hand it over and walk your team through it. A build you cannot maintain or move leaves you dependent on us, and we do not want that relationship with a client.
What happens when the model we built on is superseded?
It will be, probably sooner than you expect, which is why we keep the model layer swappable rather than writing to one provider's specifics throughout. Model review is part of the governance cycle from pillar one, so replacing one is a planned change rather than a rebuild.
Can you work with our existing development partner?
Yes, EPX Intelligence works with a client's existing development partner, and that is frequently the right shape: they know your systems, we bring the AI and governance layer. We would want clarity on who owns which interface before anybody writes anything, because that ambiguity is what makes joint builds go wrong.
Do you have to hold ISO 42001 to build this for us?
No, a supplier does not need to hold ISO/IEC 42001 to build a bespoke AI system for you. What matters is that the build sits inside your management system with the right assessments and controls recorded. On our own position, EPX IT holds Cyber Essentials Plus and is implementing ISO/IEC 27001.
